gung hey fat choy... or a happy chinese new year... the holiday is being celebrated across the world. the official start of the lunar new year is today, but celebrations are scheduled all week. kolo 8 news now's colin lygren is live in downtown reno with how casinos are planning to welcome guests. sarah and noah... chinese new year is actually one of the bigger holiday celebrations that happens at the eldorado and the silver legacy. its partially about gambling... but more than anything... it is about culture. nats - drums this will draw crowds this weekend. it's a traditional chinese lion dance. we're told the style hails from southern china. it's traditionally done by people who study kung fu. its being performed this weekend... not only for asian visitors... but to expose others to the culture.

that go on sale later this month, have a new fee this year. it's called the "live entertainment" tax. last week the nevada department of taxation notified burning man organizers, that the event qualified for the charge. the state says tax registration is required-- before the 15-thousand tickets go on sale. the organization previously argued for an exemption- claiming attendees--not the organization-- provided entertainment. ### faculty across the 23- campus california state university system are preparing for a five-day strike. union officials say a vote over the weekend approved a walkout in april unless a new contract deal is reached. the main issue: the size of pay-raises union members will receive this year. the faculty is seeking a five percent increase. the university is offering two percent.### a dream vacation turns into a nightmare for thousands of cruise ship passengers. their royal caribbean ship was caught in giant waves that damaged the

day cruise to the bahamas.. and despite this scare.. the original plan was to continue onto florida and dock in port canaveral on monday.. but based on the weather forecast.. officials had a change of heart.. and decided to sail back to new jersey.. according to officials.. no one was seriously hurt.. but for their patience.. royal caribbean is issuing a full refund and a half- off certificate for future cruises. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. the elko city council is new york. the elko city council is looking to expand the city's airport. the elko daily free press says the city is eyeing more than 60 acres of private land adjacent to the airport for development. city officials say the land would be developed over time with long-term leases lasting about 50 years.### family and friends are mourning the three people-- killed in a mid- air collision, near the port of los angeles. crews are still searching for the bodies, and for plane

they mourn the loss of martin clement today at his church in rodando beach. "i'll miss him as a true friend. it's still a shock, as we all are. we are in mourning." on the st. lawrence martyr catholic church website, they identitefed deacon martin clement as one of the people killed in the mid-air collsion friday afternoon. "a deacon, in the catholic church, the word deacon means servent, and that's what martin was." clement and another man were in one plane. mary falstrom was piloting the other. "she loved to fly, that was her." rich and mary falstrom were married 24 years. friday, she told him she just had to get in her plane and take off. "it's too pretty a day, i got to go and fly. that was the last time i saw her." she was an experienced pilot. so was clement. him and his wife traveled flew into little airports up in northern california... and then camp along side the plane. clement had his own business in rodando

friend of his told us clement had his own airplane and kept it here at the torrence airport. the two planes involved in that deadly mid-air collision on friday took off from this airport. the planes collided here along the coast of san pedro. pilots told us this airspace gets awfully crowded because pilots from four local airports use this area for practicing maneuvers. friday, three people were killed here. mary falstrom, martin clement, and another man whose name has not been made public. in torrence, greg mills. kcal 9 news. hundreds of rooftop solar workers brought wheelbarrows full of cards signed by rooftop solar to today's the nevada public utilities commission meeting. last month n-v energy offered seven timelines for carrying out grandfathering. one would implement a rate hike gradually over four years as regulators wanted, while a more dramatic option would implement it all at once but 20 years down the road. after criticism from rooftop solar companies, n-v energy issued a more forceful

20-year plan. regulators aren't expected to make a decision until later in the week. a consumer alert tonight... i-phone 6 owners who have their phones fixed by a third- party company... may find their phone dead. it's called "error 53." the guardian reports that "i-o-s 9"... apple's newest operating system.... permanently disables the phone, if it detects a repair has been carried out by a non-apple technician. the issue affects the home button on the i- phone 6... which has fingerprint recognition built in. the issue has also impacted customers whose phones had been damaged... then installed an update from apple. the error permanently erases all user data. it's generated thousands of complaints online. apple says error 53 is part of a measure to prevent tampering, and protect customers' security. ### a new study reveals the change of seasons impacts our ability to

cold, snow, darkness by 5 o'clock? there's plenty of things about winter that can make you moody. but now, new research suggesting that changes in the seasons may also take a toll on your intellect. in a small study, researchers at the university of liege in belgium studied 28 healthy volunteers at multple points over two years... periodically scanning their brains to see how they handled demanding intellectual tasks during different times of the year... looking especially at areas involved in sustained attention. oddly... these areas appeared least active in winter, and most active in summer. and when they compared the function of brain areas required for more complex thinking... they found that activity in these regions peaked in fall and dropped in the spring. while this research may be far too early to allow us to predict the best times of the year for taking an important exam... it does provide tantalizing clues to how our brains might change to weather the changes

allegedly assaulting two off-duty police officers... it happened last night at a nightclub in philadelphia... one of the victims may have suffered a skull fracture... a major league baseball player has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a valet... delmon young is accused of choking and threateninng a man at a miami hotel... he's been charged with battery.. young played for the orioles last season, he is currently a free agent. the wolf pack basketball team has a pair of home gamesthis week... first up is air force on wednesday night... and today their guard, cj siples, sy-pulls was named the conference player of the week... he led the falcons to a pair of home wins... he scored 13 points against wyoming, then had a career-high 25 points in the win over boise state... he is only averaging five points per game this season. tipoff on wednesday is schedule for 7pm... the pack beat the falcons by 23 points last month erick green will not
